URBAN DESIGN STRATEGY
Looking eastward from Beijing, the urban green heart by the side of the Grand Canal stands out prominently, with the "Canal Boat" docked amidst a pleasant green landscape. It is laid out in an east-west direction, unfolding layer by layer with the undulating terrain. Within walking distance, it encompasses bus stops, subway stations, and bike-sharing stations, conveniently connecting various facilities. The prosperity brought by the ancient shipping docks and the tremendous convenience they provided in terms of transportation have been seamlessly carried forward to today. The stories of "boats, sails, and water" on the ancient canal are narrated here, exuding a serene and elegant atmosphere, as well as being implicit and inclusive.

The stories of "boats, sails, and water"
The total construction area of the museum is 99,700 square meters, with an above-ground area of 62,000 square meters and an underground area of 37,700 square meters. The public access area accounts for 70% of the total construction area and is divided into north and south buildings by a natural water system. The unique design of the "water street" is open, providing an immersive experience of the vibrant and three-dimensional cultural heritage of the Grand Canal for visitors stepping into the "Canal Boat".

ARCHITECTURE CONCEPT
"Boats and oars travel a thousand miles, converging into a city." The water flows through the city, reflecting the alternating stillness and motion of the buildings. The scenery changes with the movements of the people. On both sides of the Water Street, the south and north towers of the museum resemble two ancient figures who have weathered the storms, facing each other by the riverside. One seems to be carried on a boat, while the other stands atop the city, silently observing the visitors who wander through this place a thousand years later. Time passes, but what remains unchanged is the rhythm of natural light and shadow under the giant sails, and the vibrant daily life of the citizens filled with the charm of the city.

CIRCULATION AND FUNCTION
The functional layout follows the flow, allowing the public to sequentially enter the ceremonial hall, lecture hall, screening room, and other pre-exhibition spaces. After crossing the aerial bridge, amidst a blend of reality and imagination, they cross the "water street" that awakens memories of the Grand Canal to reach the exhibition halls in the main building.

The saying "Beijing, the city that drifted to the Grand Canal" in history reflects the ancient wisdom of the Chinese nation in city construction. Therefore, the material selection for this museum is inevitably closely related to historical and cultural elements.
On one hand, the translucent and dynamic white metal mesh material combined with the wooden structure highlights the intention of "ship and sail" in the design. On the other hand, the main building incorporates a deep gray stone material on its exterior walls to represent the concept of "city," symbolizing the compatibility and integration of "Beijing culture" due to the convergence of "Grand Canal culture."

The transparent "sail"
The interior decoration materials primarily consist of dark stone, red oak and elm wood veneer, and imitation bronze material, which aim to express the unique sense of weight in the museum. For example, in the ground floor of the audience shared hall, slightly different shades of dark gray stone slabs represent the concept of "city," complemented by marble with water-like patterns on the floor, embodying the theme of "Beijing, the city that drifted to the Grand Canal." In terms of decorative elements, Yunlei pattern is chosen as the dark pattern on the bottom surface of the audience shared hall; due to its depth, the pattern scale is increased with two or four continuous squares to be used as patterns for the column heads and top surface of the colonnade, enriching the spatial language while adding a sense of courtesy to the audience shared hall.

ECOLOGY DESIGN - EMCCB*
In terms of energy utilization, we pursue low carbon and high efficiency. 81% of the occupied spaces have a solar factor (DF) of at least 3%, while 84.1% of the main functional areas achieve an air renewal rate of at least twice per hour. The design incorporates geothermal energy, which can meet the heating and cooling demands of 55.2% of the building. Each room has the capability of independently adjusting temperature, and the wind speed in outdoor public spaces during winter is controlled below 4.5 meters per second.
In material selection, we emphasize sustainability. 81.9% of the internal partitions are made from reusable materials, and the 8500 square meters of clay roof tiles enable 18% of rainwater to be reused. All materials used comply with the recommended glare index (25), and the average roof reflectance coefficient is at least 0.4 (within the range of 0 to 1). In the 46% of total area covered by outdoor green spaces, 70% of the ground coverings have permeability, making a positive contribution to the ecological environment.
