Core of the Speech:
Original Practice and Ideological Output,
Decoding the Architectural Expression of "Weightless Ground"
Opening with the assertion that "architecture is a core part of art, not a subsidiary of engineering or real estate," the lecture clarified Atelier Alter’s creative stance: rejecting symbolic reproduction and homogeneous design, and adhering to developing original languages to respond to site, culture, and functional needs. Centering on the poetic core of "Weightless Ground"—challenging the constraints of gravity, integrating landscape with architecture, and presenting profound cultural context in a lightweight form—Xiaojun Bu dissected the complete logic from concept to implementation through more than 10 completed projects covering multiple scales and types:
Cultural Landmark Projects: Contemporary Interpretation of Cultural Context and Gravity Challenge
- Yingliang Stone Natural History MuseumInspired by the stone industry’s "crystal melting into rock" process, the design adopts the spatial language of crystal interiors to create the architectural form. By introducing skylights, it forms the "shadowless space" named by Tadao Ando inside the museum. It expresses the heavy texture of stone through lightweight design techniques while making light the core narrative element of the space, achieving the visual experience of a "floating crystal." The building cleverly connects exhibition spaces and office areas through light reflection, making stone both a architectural carrier and the protagonist of cultural expression.

- Sunner MuseumA zero-emission ecological museum built for China’s largest chicken supplier, located in the Wuyi Mountain area. The core design is "elevating the ground into a mountain range," disassembling the building into three folded ground forms, and drawing on the structural logic of retaining walls to avoid soil collapse, resulting in a naturally growing architectural silhouette. The building has no square door or window openings; the ventilation system is integrated with the corrugated pattern of the facade. The 600-millimeter-thick roof is covered with soil and vegetation, featuring both rainwater collection and self-cleaning functions. The roof ramps and viewing platforms are open to the public, becoming a public space used by 300 people daily. Internally, based on the prototype of "chicken feed storage towers," a spiral exhibition route similar to the Guggenheim Museum is created, while the entrance hall creates a church-like spiritual atmosphere with its pure spatial form.

- Qujing Fossil MuseumFocusing on the core imagery of "fossils buried in rock layers," the design inverts the ground levels to the upper part of the building, simulating geological structures through stacked spatial forms, making the exhibition route an exploration process of "excavating fossils," which not only echoes regional history but also creates a unique spatial experience.
Industrial Heritage Renovation Projects: Logic of Rebirth for Old Spaces
- Dali Transformer Park TheaterRetaining the concrete main structure of the 1980s shoebox-style factory, the design transforms the language of local traditional gray tile roofs into modern floating ramps and facade elements. Breaking the convention that "theaters are confined indoors," the design sets up open-air stages and rest platforms on the roof, allowing actors to rehearse and perform outdoors, integrating the building into daily urban life. Internally, through a liftable floating stage and an integrated coffee bar performance area, the boundary between performance and life is blurred, achieving the integration of large-scale theater structures and small-scale regional architecture.

- Best Cheers Stone MuseumA renovation project designed for the world’s largest stone supplier, with the core proposition of "making thick skin itself architecture." Drawing on the sense of thickness of Egyptian temples and Greek columns, large stone blocks of 4m×2m×2m are used as the basic volume, forming lighting and circulation spaces through gaps between the stones. Rejecting traditional door and window openings, it achieves ventilation and lighting through "cutting rather than drilling." The design team conducted typological research using 400 types of stones provided by the client, exploring a new architectural language of "gaps as spaces," creating a strong contrast between the thickness of the facade and the lightness of light.
Public and Comprehensive Projects: Original Exploration Across Scales
- BIT Sports Center
- A comprehensive sports facility serving a top military university, including a swimming pool, basketball court, gymnasium and other functions. Inspired by "missile trajectories," the design creates a continuous curved floating roof that not only echoes the university’s rocket research characteristics but also creates an open outdoor public space through a large-span cantilever structure. The building has become the core carrier of campus technological activities, where companies such as Huawei hold robot competitions and talent recruitment, realizing the multi-fusion of sports functions and academic exchanges.

- Wuli Epoch Culture CenterA sales and office building in the mountainous area of Beijing, with the core design of "extending the ground to the roof." Through folded aerial corridors and suspended galleries, scattered functional spaces are connected, allowing visitors to naturally reach the roof viewing platform from the ground via ramps, experiencing the spatial transformation "from the ground to the air" throughout the journey. The interior of the building is dominated by a circulation system, with all functional spaces arranged around the movement line, forming a borderless flowing experience that completely breaks the closed form of traditional office buildings.

- Sino-France Culture CenterLocated at the intersection of a Han Dynasty cultural site and a wetland, with "green materials + parametric design" as the core, the building adopts green stone and glass fiber reinforced concrete (GRC) as a whole, with a form echoing the wetland landscape and bronze cultural heritage. The building’s ramps lead directly to the roof, realizing visual connection between the city, wetland and architecture. Although not yet completed, it has become a public space that citizens are eager to experience.
Conceptual and Competition Projects: Exploring the Boundaries of Ideas
- Dubai Racecourse Surrounding Tower Competition EntryInspired by "horse tails fluttering in the wind," combined with the characteristics of ocean air currents, it creates an integrated design of towers and podiums with smooth forms. The building integrates structure and form, responding to the sense of movement and natural environment of the site with a "one-stroke" curve. Although not winning the bid, it demonstrates the ability to accurately respond to specific site conditions.

- Abandoned Epidemic Prevention Unit Renovation Community CenterAiming at a large number of idle single epidemic prevention units after the pandemic, the "shelf-type roof structure" integration scheme is proposed. The epidemic prevention units with complete functions but no one to use are suspended in the gable roof frame, forming a new community commercial and activity space, realizing the regeneration and reorganization of space on the basis of retaining the functions of existing facilities.

Core Insights:
Architecture is Art,
and More Importantly, a Response to the World
During the lecture, Xiaojun Bu put forward distinct design propositions based on practice, triggering in-depth on-site thinking:
- The essential difference between originality and AI: "Design is not taking photos of babies, but giving birth to babies." AI can replicate existing forms, but originality stems from in-depth understanding of the site, culture and needs, and is an irreproducible ideological product.
- The artistic attribute of architecture: Architecture should go beyond function and efficiency, carrying philosophical thinking and social responsibility, and being a dual expression of the architect’s personality and social ecology.
- The interpretation of regional culture: Both China and Moscow face the "weight" of historical heritage, but young architects should jump out of symbolic reproduction and respond to culture with abstract languages. For example, the abstract artistic conception of Chinese ink painting and the realistic tradition of Russian oil painting, although different in form, both are rooted in respect for regional ecology.
- The value of multi-scale practice: The firm’s works range from furniture-sized installations to 160,000-square-meter cultural and sports complexes, refusing to be limited by a single scale. It is believed that exploration at different scales can nourish each other, integrating the ingenuity of small designs into large buildings and empowering small spaces with the logic of large projects.

During the Q&A session, teachers and students raised practical questions such as "the implementation of complex designs," "client communication," and "site analysis," and Xiaojun Bu’s responses were both ideological and practical:
- Regarding "how to persuade clients to accept high-difficulty designs": "Clients buy not only functions but also imagination and identity. Through accurate scene presentation and value interpretation, we let clients see the unique influence brought by original design, which is a win-win result."
- Regarding "the difference between government and private clients": "Government projects pay more attention to public value and give architects more freedom for artistic expression; although private clients have commercial demands, more and more clients are willing to pay for originality because they understand that uniqueness is the core competitiveness."
- Regarding "site analysis methods": "Analysis should consider both physical aspects (terrain, climate, sightlines) and abstract aspects (history, culture, client needs). We will formulate clear goal lists, such as ^must do a good job in green expression^ and ^strengthen public attributes,^ so that the design always focuses on core values."
