Located in Dortmund’s Phoenix-West site—a historic cradle of Ruhr Region’s steel industry—the Materna Information & Communications SE’s new headquarters, integrates a bold V-shaped volume into the site. Designed by Gerber Architekten, the triangular form creates a central courtyard. A landscaped staircase connects daily workflows with nature, while energy-saving technologies like photovoltaic systems underscore its commitment to sustainability. Accommodating over 1,800 employees, the complex stands as the largest office complex in the Ruhr region, symbolizing the transformation of industrial heritage into a digital future.

作为鲁尔区昔日的工业重地，凤凰湖西区的这片三角地块承载着钢铁锻造的历史记忆——1998年前，这里曾是钢铁加工与锻造的重要基地。Materna新总部也以V形体量回应这一场地特质：锐角体量既最大化利用地块空间，又形成视觉标识，反映了Materna的活力、国际视野与创新精神。

As a former industrial heartland of the Ruhr Region, this triangular site in Phoenix Lake West District carries the historical imprint of steel forging—it served as a critical base for steel processing before 1998. The architecture responds to the site’s characteristics with a V-shaped triangular mass; its acute form both maximizes land use and creates a distinctive visual emblem, reflecting Materna’s vitality, global outlook, and innovative spirit.

建筑西侧以一个弧形锐角面向城市主干道，恰似扬帆前行的船头，反映企业的创新精神。南侧则通过退界处理，以一排列柱界定出半围合的户外餐饮区。

The west façade faces the city’s main arterial road, its gradually tapering curved prow resembling a sailing ship’s bow. On the south side, a recessed boundary and a row of columns define a semi-enclosed outdoor dining area.

建筑主入口位于北侧，通过内退的界面连接环岛枢纽，以开放的姿态迎接人流。东北角也开设有一个阶梯式入口，员工可以从此进入入口大厅。入口处向内折叠，也以狭长的线性轮廓围合出一个中央庭院，既化解了锐角地块的局促感，又为办公空间引入了自然光与绿意。

The main entrance is on the north side, connected to the roundabout hub by a recessed facade that welcomes visitors with a welcoming gesture. In the northeast corner, a stepped entrance allows employees direct access to the entrance hall(plaza). The mass folds inward along a slender linear profile to enclose the central courtyard, alleviating the acute-angle constraint while introducing daylight and greenery into the offices.

外立面通体以天然石材覆盖，通过水平延展的线条弱化体量厚重感，厚重稳定中又不失轻盈。上部五层办公区则遵循网格化布局，形成有致规律的开窗立面。

The facade is entirely clad in natural stone, its horizontal lines mitigate the mass’s heaviness, achieving solidity with a sense of lightness. The five upper office floors follow a modular grid, creating a rhythmically ordered window pattern.

当阳光掠过自然石材立面，新总部也在书写工业遗产之上的新未来。

As sunlight sweeps across the natural stone facade, the new headquarters forges a new future atop its industrial heritage.

让自然景观无缝融入建筑和空间内外，消弭人与自然生硬的边界感，是Materna总部的一大特征。

在Materna总部中，自然景观不仅仅是装饰，更是与建筑共生的要素。因原工业地块地下土层限制，双层停车场被抬升至地面层，在其上覆盖着中央庭院——这处庭院既是对三角地形的回应，亦成为上层办公区的窗景。庭院中央一株40年树龄的沼泽橡树静立，悄然回应着企业的成长。

A hallmark of the Materna headquarters is the seamless integration of natural landscape with interior and exterior spaces, dissolving the rigid boundary between people and nature.

Due to subsoil constraints on the former industrial site, the two-level parking structure is elevated to ground level and topped by the central courtyard—both a response to the triangular terrain and a framed view for the upper offices. A 40-year-old swamp oak stands at the heart of the courtyard, quietly echoing the company’s growth.

入口大厅以三层通高尺度容纳了一座景观阶梯，绿意盎然的阶梯如“梯田”般自大厅向上生长，将人流自然导向中央庭院及办公区。阶梯还化身成为非正式社交场域：台阶间兼作可席地而坐的休憩座位，小花坛中的地灯在夜间泛起暖光，人们在此偶遇、交谈或独处，工作与休憩的界限被柔化。

In the three-story entrance hall (plaza), a landscaped staircase grows upward like a terraced hillside, guiding foot traffic naturally toward the landscaped courtyard and offices. The stair doubles as an informal social space: its treads serve as seating, and ground-level planters shed warm light, inviting chance encounters, conversations, or solitary reflection, thus softening the line between work and relaxation.

自然主题也在其余空间延续。在首层的“Byte餐厅”（Restaurant Byte），钢桁架结构消解体量感，营造出无柱的开放空间，绿植墙与绿色调桌椅充满生命力。餐厅向外延伸出户外露台，建筑边界被一排有致排列的柱廊围合，向内则通过玻璃幕墙与入口大厅视觉交融。当视线穿过柱廊，远方的城市景观与近处的庭院绿意交叠，建筑也成为人与自然对话的媒介。

On the ground floor, the “Restaurant Byte” features a steel truss structure that dissolves the sense of mass, creating a column-free open space enlivened by plant walls and furnishings. The dining area extends to an outdoor terrace, enclosed by an orderly colonnade, while its glass wall visually connects to the entrance hall. Gazing through the colonnade, the distant cityscape and nearby courtyard greenery overlap, turning the building into a mediator in the conversation between people and nature.

二至六层是办公区域，采用双轴灵活性设计，构建了高效适配的办公布局。空间布局围绕一个中央区展开——这里集合了技术室与休憩区，两侧则分布着多种办公空间，诸如主管办公室、独立办公室以及布局灵活的弹性空间。布局灵活高效，让员工在私密与开放、专注与互动之间寻得平衡。

As a leader in Germany’s IT industry, Materna requires a flexible and diverse office environment to stimulate employee collaboration and provoke dynamic exchanges of ideas.

Floors two through six house office areas designed with two-axis flexibility, creating highly adaptable layouts. The plan centers on a central zone areas for office technology and retreat rooms, flanked by a variety of individual rooms—department head offices, standard offices, agile areas etc. This flexible arrangement allows staff to find the right balance between privacy and openness, focus and interaction.

多数办公室都以玻璃墙保持透明开放，办公室内的墙面或是玻璃白板，或是吸音的织物饰面，满足员工不同需求。而楼梯、电梯、卫生间及技术设施等被整合进核心筒，同时容纳企业必需的电气设施、机房、通风设备等，确保功能区运转流畅。

Most offices use glass partitions for transparency; interior walls alternate between glass whiteboards and acoustic fabric panels to support versatile use. Elevator and toilet areas are integrated into the building cores, along with cleaning supplies rooms, electrical/IT rooms, ensuring smooth operational workflows.

首层设有多种规格的会议室，与餐厅及入口大厅相连。部分会议室采用可移动隔墙划分空间，配合隔音墙面与天花设计，满足灵活使用需求。这些会议室被有意置于首层，被绿意环抱，与开放用餐区相邻，既营造亲切氛围，也促进企业与外部的互动交流。

Variously sized conference rooms are located on the ground floor, connected to the restaurant and entrance. Some rooms feature movable partitions along with acoustically treated walls and ceilings for flexible use. These conference rooms sit adjacent to the open dining area, fostering a welcoming atmosphere and encouraging interaction between the company and external guests.

整座建筑不仅亲近自然，也结合有效的能源策略实现真正的“绿色建筑”。

作为一家科技企业的总部，可持续责任是重中之重。盖博建筑发挥长久积累的可持续实践经验，为这座可同时供1800余人使用的建筑构想了因地制宜的能源策略。

The entire building not only embraces nature but also incorporates an effective energy strategy to achieve true “green building” status.

As the headquarters of a technology company, sustainability is paramount. Gerber Architekten leveraged its extensive experience in sustainable practice to devise an energy strategy tailored to this building, which accommodates over 1,800 employees.

各个建筑翼楼的屋顶表面均设计为倒置屋顶，4至5层以上的砂石屋顶区域有序规划布局，尽可能多地布置光伏系统，并集成再生电力回收系统。此外，结合水循环、冰蓄冷系统等设施手段，最终整座建筑符合德国KfW40能效规范，整体能耗较常规建筑至少减少了60%。

The roof surfaces of each building wing are designed as inverted roofs. Gravel-topped roof areas above the fourth and fifth floors are arranged to maximize photovoltaic installations, integrated with regenerative power-recovery systems. Additionally, water-recirculation and ice-thermal-storage systems are employed. As a result, the building meets Germany’s KfW40 energy-efficiency standard and reduces overall energy consumption by at least 60% compared to conventional buildings.

Materna总部以大型的三角体量对话工业场地肌理，同时实现人与自然、办公与休憩的和谐过渡。这一项目也是盖博建筑的重要里程碑。

The new Materna Headquarters engages with the industrial site’s fabric through a large triangular form, while creating a harmonious transition between people and nature, work and leisure. This project also marks an important milestone for Gerber Architekten.
