In the heart of Hangzhou's Xiaoshan Science and Technology City, 16 kilometers from downtown and just 10 kilometers from the airport, lies the crowning jewel of Qianwan International Community - Qianwan Guiyuan. Masterfully designed by Pok Kobkongsanti, founder of TROP Landscape Design, this urban oasis uniquely blends the terraced rhythms of Hangzhou's tea fields with contemporary resort aesthetics through its innovative "pixel composition" concept, creating a metropolitan sanctuary that harmoniously unites Eastern poeticism with international sophistication.

Poetic Dialogue Between Urban Interface and Natural Resources

Faced with an irregularly shaped site featuring sparse local population yet well-established amenities, TROP's design team drew inspiration from Hangzhou's unique regional context to propose an innovative "Pixel Composition" concept. The masterplan adopts a hybrid layout combining high-rise towers and low-density villas, with building volumes cascading from the urban edge toward the riverbank to create a rhythmic skyline.

The high-rise towers, serving as the urban interface for this international community, incorporate entrance designs inspired by Hangzhou's tea terraces and traditional craftsmanship. Custom planters and lattice screens reinterpret Chinese garden aesthetics through contemporary minimalist language. Meanwhile, the riverside villa clusters employ zigzagging layouts and "scenery-transitioning-with-every-step" techniques to cultivate an intimate, refined waterfront living experience.

Pixel Composition: A Modular Landscape Narrative

TROP deconstructed traditional tea terraces and mountain-water landscapes into geometric modules. Through a "pixelation" approach, the design realigns building axes with varying orientations to establish a cohesive yet dynamic spatial order. These white pixelated structures interlock with terraced water features, evoking the interplay of negative space and ink washes in Chinese brush painting:

-The Welcome Pavilion & Central Water Feature draw inspiration from ink painting, with pool-bottom textures mimicking the brushstrokes on Xuan paper.

-The movable planters draw inspiration from both the building façade and traditional Chinese lattice windows ("flower windows"), while integrating modular greenery systems to enable seasonal transformation of the garden.

-The south-facing wall is designed as a giant picture frame, "borrowing" the shimmering reflections of the urban river and drifting clouds into the garden.

This modular design not only resolves the challenges of an irregular site plan, but also transforms each art wall into dynamic screens, while latticed windows and corridors frame ever-changing vignettes. As one moves through the space, the landscape unfurls like a scroll, creating a theatrical "scenery-with-every-step" experience. Residents strolling through find themselves immersed in a three-dimensional Shan Shui ink painting.

Wandering Garden: An Immersive Homecoming Journey

Breaking away from conventional linear pathways, TROP draws inspiration from the Chinese classical garden philosophy of "circulatory wandering" to create a meandering landscape spine. This ribbon-like path mirrors the organic veins of tea terraces, threading through a series of functionally diverse landscape nodes:

-Intimate Experience: The townhouse area employs zigzag layouts to gently slow one's pace while enhancing spatial privacy.

The riverside courtyard deserves special mention: its sculptural pergola draws inspiration from classical garden lattice windows, serving dual roles as art installation and leisure space. To the south, the riverfront deck employs "framed-view" techniques, using metal frameworks to artistically curate the scenery.

Contemporary Interpretation of Cultural DNA

As the visionary designer behind Hangzhou's Four Seasons Hotel at West Lake, Pok Kobkongsanti demonstrates masterful cultural articulation. For the Qianwan Guiyuan project, he transcends clichéd Chinoiserie, achieving cultural translation through three design dimensions:

-Elemental Recomposition: Traditional components like lattice windows and moon gates are deconstructed into contemporary art installations.

-Reimagined Landscape: Ink-Stroke Motifs Transformed into Paving Patterns – Where Two-Dimensional Art Becomes Immersive Spatial Poetry

-The Spirit of Heritage: The layered rhythm of tea terraces is abstracted into undulating lines across the architectural facade.

This cultural expression transcends mere formal mimicry, offering instead a contemporary interpretation of Eastern aesthetic philosophy. Here, landscape and architecture engage in harmonious dialogue—where the rhythmic cadence of tiered building masses and three-dimensional gardens reflect and enhance one another.

Transcending Physical Space: A Sanctuary for the Soul

"A sense of resort is not merely replicating the physical space of a hotel, but rather a state of mental relaxation and freedom." This statement by Pok Kobkongsanti perfectly encapsulates the design philosophy behind Qianwan Guiyuan. Here, landscape transcends its role as architectural accessory to become both a vessel for living and a sanctuary for the soul. Through the innovative "Pixel Composition" methodology, TROP has transmuted Eastern elements—tea terraces, classical gardens, ink-wash landscapes—into a contemporary design lexicon. Within the urban fabric of Xiaoshan Science City, this vision unfolds as an open, timeless, and evolving residential tapestry. Qianwan Guiyuan is more than a housing development; it is a seminal experiment in Hangzhou’s modern residential aesthetics, redefining life’s possibilities within an international community.
