The Haikou project's creative concept roots deeply in the school's innovative education ideas, which will adopt an optional class system and tutorial system, with the aim to enable students to conduct inquisitive and experiential learning on various themes and projects. It is further a continuation and manifestation of The Peking University education tradition. 'Beida', how the university is called colloquially*, has consistently led global rankings of the best academic institutions in China. In the Chinese capital, it is also well-known for its stunning campus grounds and for the beauty of its traditional Chinese architecture.

Along with fulfilling the required school functions and enabling the educational philosophy of cultivating students' individual development, independent thinking and learning, Crossboundaries was facing very special local topographical and climate conditions.

640.gif

© Crossboundaries

Significant height differences between the North and the South of the site represented a major topographical challenge for the architects and had to be addressed first, to conceive and develop the overall form and structure of the school architecture.

The campus was terraced and further arranged according to Feng Shui principles, with the different functional building parts set in a sequence following the terrain, to achieve balance between the Ying and Yang forces. At the same time the site was divided into a series of diverse "micro environments". The final layout and the iconic curved, seemingly S-shaped building with an organic cloud shaped add-on, reflects the actual contour lines of the terrain, to accommodate the existing topographic conditions.

The cloud shaped learning center, the "brain" of the entire school, is placed in the heart of the campus, seemingly floating above the spacious library and other public areas, both indoor and outdoor. Inside this cloud that represents the main communication hub between teachers and students, there will be classrooms for the Middle School and High School departments. Flanking both sides of the cloud are buildings with other functions, providing for more than 3600 students, e.g. maker space, art center, sports center and dormitory complex.

“祥云”两侧依次排布了技术创客中心、艺术中心、体育中心和宿舍区,建筑高度由靠近学术中心的位置向基地边缘慢慢升起,凸显与学术中心在高度上的统一和互补。

They are organized in a linear way, shaped like two "boomerangs" running together below the educational center, the cloud. The iconic S-shape is a direct response to the specific topographic situation as well as wind direction and sunlight/shadow orientation. The rather slim building depth guarantees cross-ventilation, and its low height avoids long casting shadows onto the terrain. The influx of natural light on the architecture is maximized where it is of benefit, but also is controlled.

640 (3).gif

Creating an intriguing contrast, the educational center, the cloud, is juxtaposed with the more regular, but dynamic S-shaped building strip, passing through it from below. From the middle, closest to the cloud, the building elements rise upwards leading to a full building height at the dormitory on one and the sports center on the other side respectively, creating a unity and balance with the floating cloud in the middle. The building arrangement from one end of the complex to the other results in a wave like movement, smoothly following the different elevations of the topography.

The overall campus design is led by the idea of a full integration with nature and became also a benchmark for the application of tropical architecture principles, considering sun shading, air circulation, ventilation, building orientation and openings. Through green design strategies and the usage of special technologies such as solar energy and use of reclaimed water, the buildings’ energy consumption, particularly the cooling load will be optimally reduced.

To date, the dormitory complex is finalized and in use, except its roof canopy, already providing housing and temporary teaching facilities (until the whole campus is operational) for newly enrolled students. The skeleton and main structures of the learning center, as well as the sports & arts center, have also already been completed and it is expected that they will be put into full use before the end of 2021.

Rising above the Campus. The Learning Cloud

640.webp (21).jpg

To achieve the effect of the learning center floating as an organic cloud shape above the other buildings, the architects had to overcome two main challenges while designing the structure. The first one, how to distribute the weight and still keep a visually 'light', suspending effect, and the second, to comply with the high seismic regulations in Haikou.

640.webp (22).jpg

640.webp (23).jpg

The base of the cloud is finally supported by diagonal pillars on its outer edge, carefully balancing out the spaces between the columns, in order to avoid emphasizing the actual weight of the cloud and still appearing to be floating above the other structures.

640.webp (24).jpg

Today, the completed core structure of the academic center is supported by 45 sets of giant steel pillars, each set consisting of four pillars, one diagonal and three straight ones.  As a consequence, within the overall building volume, the learning center seemingly rises above the other more linear building elements of the school. The cloud is partially staggered within, to accommodate properly the areas of Middle and High School as well as local topographical conditions and to guarantee better ventilation throughout.

Once finalized, the learning center will house all the teaching facilities and classrooms for implementing the contemporary teaching philosophy of Peking University.

"For us, schools are in a way the most influential building types in terms of having social impact on people's behavior and lives. We strongly believe that spaces shape people.", says Hao Dong, "This is another one in a series of school projects Crossboundaries realized, where we created a learning space, that is engaging and influencing students to develop and to achieve their goals, a space that proactively tries to facilitate this process in the best possible way."

640.webp (27).jpg

Crossboundaries' proposal for the design concept was to create a “serendipity learning space”, an environment that promotes knowledge generation and learning by random and unexpected encounters. The concept foresees three types of areas, standard classrooms (Type 1), leisure tutoring spaces (Type 2) and shared communication and leisure areas (Type 3).

640.webp (28).jpg

Offering different kinds of learning spaces triggers different kinds of learning modes and interactions between teachers and students. Type 1 are more private and suitable for traditional classroom teaching; Type 2 focus on stimulating tutoring or exchange between students in-between classes, and Type 3 are open spaces that are mainly distributed on each floor near the central courtyard, are used for lunch breaks, leisure and other activities. The ladder also connects the learning center to other functions within the campus, e.g. the maker space and the performing arts square.

Once completed, four independent single-story volumes located under the academic center will provide supermarkets, cafes and libraries, with a gathering area, an open square between them.

The sequence of buildings consists of 4 blocks: from the North, starting with Senior High School and faculty dormitories, followed by Middle School dormitories, Junior High School & International High School dormitories and finally, towards the South, another building element with lunch break rooms, canteens and the so-called "houses" for college activities, composed of public hubs for 3-4 school classes each.

The architecture follows the specifics of the declining terrain of the construction area. All units have a basement, but are different in final height - in the North, the highest consisting of 5 floors, each of the following ones one floor lower than the previous.

The roof contour line of the steel structure mimics the described wave, slowly declining towards the cloud and center, rising again upwards towards the perimeter of the site.

The dormitory incorporates a living community with high density and a large number of functions, on a massive scale - housing for 1600 students, sufficient sanitary facilities,  50 self-study exam rooms for senior students, 150 dormitory rooms for faculty and staff, 7 rooms for comprehensive college activities, dining halls and a canteen with kitchen & supporting facilities for around 2000 people; bicycle storage, etc., on a  total area of 36,000m2.

Crossboundaries' priority was to create a human and at the same time comfortable environment, with as much light as possible and sufficient ventilation. The intention was to come up with a most agreeable, vibrant space for living, for resting, for communication and other interaction.

640.webp (35).jpg

To provide additional ventilation and also to enhance lighting within the dormitory buildings, two types of courtyards, large (25m wide) and small (10m wide), were integrated throughout.

Green strategies were applied e.g. a slightly slanted roof allows the summer wind to pass through the 25-meter-wide atrium yards, whereas the narrower, chimney like courtyards with 10 m width induce a stack ventilation effect.

640.webp (36).jpg

© Crossboundaries

640 (9).gif

Each one of the 4 individual units has a big courtyard in its center, for socializing and resting with greenery in them. Palm trees were planted in the basement underneath, 'breaking' from below through holes in the ground of the courtyards. The planting pits, encircled by walls, also let light through and are surrounded by seating for students, becoming attractive public areas, providing shadow and enhanced air circulation.

640.webp (37).jpg

The Dormitory building blocks are connected by single corridors for promoting cross-ventilation. The inside courtyards are therefore not only vertical openings, but also create a horizontal connection with those corridors and within the entire complex, as a consequence contributing to energy savings and a reduction of the emission footprint.

Beside from creating an agreeable living environment, the airy yards also offer some daily practical features - corridors lining the 10m wide patio openings make it possible to dry laundry inside the building.

The student accommodations deviate strongly from traditional dormitory layouts. Part of Crossboundaries' design is the emphasis on developing living spaces that are warm, stimulating, relaxing and comfortable.

640.webp (38).jpg

Student housing is organized in "suites" – the large majority forming a unit of 4 rooms, that are always sharing one common living area, where one can chat and interact like in a real life, "family" setting. Two suites always share washrooms and toilets, accessible from those living rooms. Across the whole dormitory complex, the ratio of sanitary facilities to student number is high in order to avoid inconvenient queueing up and extended waiting times.

640.webp (39).jpg

Open fire escape staircases along the long axis of the building lead directly from the top of the building units to the ground. They serve not only as an evacuation route running vertically from floor to floor, but also serve as the main access and entrance to the different dormitory areas. The design implemented a clear separation of accommodations for male and female students, and each staircase corresponds to one of the specific zones.

The West part of the campus is dedicated to the arts and sports center & outdoor sports areas. The L-shaped volume closer to the floating cloud houses the arts center, and continues to the South and West then with the outdoors sports grounds. At this point the concrete base structure of this part is finalized.

The sports center requires a rather large height of 24 m, split into 2 floors, containing a basketball hall with 9 m clearance, as well as badminton courts and a 50 m swimming pool. Additional service functions as changing rooms, showers, toilets etc. are located at a mezzanine level on the side to serve all areas conveniently.

The outdoor sports areas will be elevated, with an underground garage for parking below.

640 (12).gif

The design of the campus includes another social aspect, trying to include an even larger community. The overall arrangement of buildings and their access will allow the surrounding residents and visitors to use the sports facilities, the theatres and auditorium without compromising the privacy of the boarding school students. The sports facilities are directly accessible from the road on its South end. Arts and sport center can both be entered through separate entrances, via an elevated, covered outdoor space at their junction.

640.webp (43).jpg

640.webp (44).jpg

As in other areas throughout the campus, the given local conditions of the existing site were integrated in the design of the sports and arts center. Above the parking the sports field is located, with running tracks around it, partly flanking the volume of the sports center. The parking garage itself, at the lowest site elevation, occupies roughly a third of the area of the sports field. At its northern side, it runs conveniently close to the public street.

640.webp (45).jpg

In between the building volume of the sports center and the outdoor sports field, a bleacher is planned, linking almost naturally the 2nd floor indoor with the outdoor, allowing for a smooth connection between the two.

Yet again, the design of the building is laid out in a way, that it accommodates optimum ventilation throughout the indoor sports environment, which will at the same time be beneficial to operate the buildings in an energy-efficient manner.

In the Arts Center, all building functions will remain on one story. There will be a series of darkrooms, a theater for a 1000-person audience and a dance rehearsal room. The backstage area of the theater will be equipped with a loading platform to facilitate loading and unloading of large props & stage materials.

Materials Matter

The whole building complex is defined by horizontal, floating lines and simple shapes, trying to give a light, airy feeling - and the used materials and textures support this appearance.

Metal aluminum panels will be applied at all roof and visible floor edges. The cantilevering roof parts are slightly elevated to enhance lightness. All across the complex, facades will consist of a combination of glass elements and white texture paint surfaces.

The top of the curtain wall of the sports center is foreseen to be made out of wooden fins providing sun shading. Volcanic rocks - unique for Haikou and locally sourced - will be used for outdoor and semi-outdoor pavements and steps. Compared to other materials, they have better water absorption qualities and are ideal for extreme weather situations, such as typhoons and rainstorms.

Corresponding semi-outdoor suspended ceilings will be made out of strips of wood.

The coexistence and sharp contrasts between wood, metal and glass curtain walls will give the whole complex a rich vitality, together with its iconic shape and atmospheric architectural form.

Architecture as a tool to make a huge social impact and as an enabler for steering human psychology and behavior. In creating a friendly and inspiring "physical" learning and living environment, the minds of future generations of students are supported in their learning curve to become independent, innovative thinkers.

Architecture integrated in nature, not an intruder, the local topography being used as inspiration for iconic building shapes, accompanied with the implementation of sustainable, energy efficient solutions and tropical architecture principles.

Paired with the unique educational philosophy of Peking University, Crossboundaries' latest project can definitely represent as a milestone in the context of China's educational landscape!
