Since 1900, Berlin’s citizens have been visiting Bad Saarow, a summer resort on lake Scharmützelsee, located 70 kilometres east of the city. Its healing thermal spring provides opportunities for relaxation and convalescence. Continuing the resort’s heritage as a popular recreational destination, a planning area is being developed on the western shore of lake Scharmützelsee, consisting of hotels, a marina with yacht club, holiday apartments and owner-occupied apartments. The Marina Apartments, an ensemble composed of five structures, are playfully distributed in a private pine forest, sloping down towards the lake.
Four of the timber-clad buildings accommodate 45 holiday apartments. The three to four-storey volumes are offset to each another. The vertical façade cladding made of dark wood reflects the colour spectrum of the surrounding forest. Floor-to-ceiling windows, balconies and roof terraces provide wide vistas of the water and the planned marina. A fifth two-story building, housing eight owner-occupied apartments, rounds off the ensemble to the north and stands out with its grey stone masonry and strong gables. Turned slightly towards the lake, the terraces and balconies open up to the south. The interiors provide wide transition areas between the individual living areas, and visual axes oriented towards the landscape and light.
