NBBJ

Award-winning architectural design firm NBBJ proudly announces having been appointed by Shanghai Sixth People’s Hospital to design a brand-new building in collaboration with SIADR. The new 104,000 squaremeter facility will host a medical center dedicated to orthopedic diagnosis and treatment – a national-level key discipline in China. Located at the northwest of the hospital campus, construction on the building was commenced in June of this year and is scheduled for completion in 2022. After Jiahui International Hospital, the Shanghai Sixth People’s Hospital will be NBBJ’s second hospital project realized in Shanghai. When complete, the new orthopedic diagnosis and treatment center will be one of the most advanced orthopedic hospitals in China.

“We are honored to be able to help patients and their families receive better services as well as creating better workplaces for medical workers by means of designing innovative medical facilities in America, China, and beyond,” said RudyWidjaja, NBBJ’s Healthcare Principal. “And
we are pleased to have the opportunity to bring our philosophy and expertise to the design of the Sixth People’s Hospital. We employ not only designers, but also clinicians, medical planners, strategic consultants, and other healthcare professionals who work alongside providers to explore new practices and processes. We firmly believe that the combination of cutting-edge facilities and thoughtful user-friendly design details will become a new trend in medical design worldwide.”

The Shanghai Sixth People's hospital, founded in 1904, is a Grade 3A general teaching hospital. The hospital’s department of orthopedics enjoys a good reputation both in China and abroad. The new orthopedic clinic center is composed of two volumes, north and south, with an east-west atrium in the middle. These three components shape the development. Orthopedic inpatients and surgery functions, which had been previously scattered throughout the hospital, are now concentrated in the newly built orthopedic diagnosis and treatment center.

In order to not block natural light in adjacent residential areas, the building adopts a stepped form, thus ensuring the sunshine residents enjoy residents is not affected. At the same time, this produces a unique volumetric shape. Multi-level roof gardens enliven windows, bringing greenery to doctors, nurses and patients who will be staying at operating rooms and ICUs. In addition, an atrium in the middle of the building diffuses sunlight into the interior, exposing patients to natural light while they wait. It also allows doctors and nurses to enjoy natural sunlight during meals and meetings.

Modular design is employed for outpatients and D&T units so that they can combine or divide up based on configuration needs. A well-shielded mobile examination room is set on each floor of the inpatient department, with mobile X-ray, B ultrasound, ECG, and other equipment to be used for inpatients. The setting of this room reduces pressure on vertical traffic, as well as the travel distance for inpatients.

To implement “patient-focused design”, the new center will be designed by incorporating a series of sustainable strategies with a goal of creating an environment that is beneficial to healing and recovery in the aspects of water efficiency, energy saving, emission reduction and healthy material selections. NBBJ will benefit a larger group of patients by drawing experiences from the success of the Shanghai Jiahui Hospital, the first LEED Gold international hospital in mainland China.

As one of the five largest medical architectural companies in the world with 76 years of firm legacy, NBBJ have contributed their design expertise to 13 of the Top 20 Best Hospitals named by US News & World Report, including The Cleveland Clinic, Massachusetts General Hospital, NYU Langone Health. In China, NBBJ has successfully delivered a patient-centered design that incorporates abundant natural light and beautiful landscapes for Jiahui International Hospital, the first foreign-funded general hospital in Shanghai.

Staying at the forefront of architectural design, NBBJ is committed to driving the development of future-forward medical structures. In 2014, the company launched a program to collaborate with some of the leading scientists and researchers, such as brain scientist Professor John Medina, who brought strategic inspirations to the company’s architects through the lens of neuroscience, architectural environment research, and big data analysis. NBBJ has since been able to enhance their ability to apply research findings in societal technologies, neuroscience, material science and more into their design works for a range of medical projects worldwide.
