Schools are permitted to resume offline classes recently. After several months of remote learning, we begin to better understand how important the campus is: collaboration, social interaction. Moreover, what makes the difference between previous and today’s campus design? Are we seeing a new form of 'best practice' emerging in the design of educational spaces?

In the past, campuses usually consisted of a number of separate buildings – sometimes quite far apart – each housing different faculties.
Today ‘connectedness’ is essential, as it is widely understood to foster serendipitous knowledge sharing and engender a culture of engagement.

—— Ben van Berkel

In this post, we will look into UNStudio's campus architecture practice.

For Echo, UNStudio, in collaboration with Arup and BBN, has created a design that fully supports new educational typologies with a circular and energy-generating building in which adaptability and the wellbeing of the user are central.

The future campus needs to be programmed with a series of agile spaces that invite students and faculty to learn, collaborate and co-create. As student numbers continue to grow, educational buildings need to be extremely flexible: they not only need to operate for shared, interfaculty use, but also need to house a large variety of flexible spaces that cater for various ways of teaching and studying and varying class sizes.

Echo will house a total of seven teaching rooms, most with a flexible layout. The largest lecture room, which can accommodate 700 people, can be divided into three separate rooms.  Four level rooms for project-based teaching, each could accommodates almost 70 people . Echo will provide 300 study spaces for group work and self-study. In total, the new building will offer space for around 1,700 students by way of the lecture rooms, classrooms and a variety of study spaces.

The project is expected to complete by the end of December 2021.

Designed by UNStudio and DP Architects, the academic campus for the Singapore University of Technology and Design reflects an in-depth understanding of the changing requirements of learning institutions today. Connectivity, collaboration, co-creation, innovation and sociality are at the basis of UNStudio’s design thinking on New Campuses.

From the exterior the SUTD academic buildings look like somewhat dense, separate blocks, but they are in fact experienced in a completely connected and open way. By introducing diagonal and framed view corridors, vertical and horizontal connections and covered walk ways and by tapering the elevations of the buildings, openness is created that means the buildings are experienced as a connected whole. Traditional divisions between rooms and corridors are also dissolved, resulting in flexible spaces and encouraging movement throughout the buildings.
