ATIONWIDE CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL

BIG LOTS BEHAVIORAL HEALTH PAVILION

Unlike typical behavioral health facilities situated in sprawling suburban campuses, the Big Lots Behavioral Health Pavilion is located on the downtown Columbus urban campus of Nationwide Children’s Hospital, making it more accessible to the community and advantageously connected to the institution’s broader medical services and clinical resources. As one of the world’s tallest and consolidated mental health facilities, the nine-story tall pavilion serves as the flagship for Nationwide Children’s new west end development at their main campus, and moves the conversation about behavioral health from the margins to the forefront, from the suburban perimeter to the center of the city.

Proudly standing as the cornerstone landmark of the new west end development of their urban Columbus campus, the Big Lots Behavioral Health Pavilion, designed by NBBJ in collaboration with  Architecture+ (who provided design expertise throughout the project with respect to patient and staff safety) consolidates a comprehensive suite of acute behavioral health services. These include a psychiatric crisis center and inpatient / crisis stabilization units —with partial hospitalization offerings, outpatient treatment services and clinical research therapies. The new building will be a bright, airy space filled with natural light to create an uplifting healing environment that provides a sense of welcoming safety, shelter and normalcy for adolescents and children with behavioral health needs.

The facility is organized around a four-story base with a five-story inpatient tower above that wraps around two large courtyards to maximize patients, loved ones and caregivers access to natural daylight and views. A centralized rooftop outdoor play deck and screened-in porches at each inpatient unit together respond to the need for safe access to the outdoors within a clinical setting.

The first four floors are designed to comfortably accommodate a variety of public, clinical, and administrative uses — such as psychiatry emergency departments, outpatient clinics, exam room pods, and open workplace and research environments — supportive of the collocated and integrated behavioral healthcare offerings this new facility provides. The lower level houses ancillary support functions such as food preparation services and material supplies handling. This level connects to the ground floor through a monumental stair that leads to a public support area with convenient amenities such as a grab & go café, a gift shop, and educational training rooms. The split of the visitor and patient elevators lobbies sets forward a planning framework throughout the facility, supporting a clear separation between front and back-of-house circulation flows.

As an interior experience, we also sought to transform the spatial ethos associated with this typology from an environment that felt correctional and punitive to one that felt familiar and nurturing. With an emphasis on welcoming safety, shelter, and normalcy, the pavilion takes cues from the existing main campus’s branded graphics strategies along with its distinctive interior design vocabulary of color, graphics, lighting, and gently curved wall surfaces. Still, it significantly increases the use of wood as a unique experiential complement specific to this building. Acting as a visual counterbalance to the landscape inspired organic floor patterns and the nature-themed colorful environmental graphics, this warm wood finish is strategically deployed across the facility to highlight important destination landmarks and define cozy sheltering nooks. Custom-built millwork furnishings finished in wood lend a sense of familiar domesticity and approachable tactility within the clinical inpatient environments without compromising safety and durability.
