There is a common misconception that Asia is full of archaic values and that women struggle to have their voices heard but after 20 years working in various Asian countries, we know the contrary to be true.

I am writing from London having just read Our Women on the Ground, a collection of essays by 19 journalists from the Middle East who report on the changing nature of their homelands. It is a refreshing insight into living and working in some of the world’s most dangerous places. The often harrowing stories upends the cliché  of the  Graham Greene and Wes Anderson (French Dispatch) type of foreign correspondentreportage.

人类人格的变迁通常是用事实和衷心的诚实来描述的，但是我们所定义的性别差异，在战争、死亡、失去和爱面前，几乎没有什么价值。

The vicissitudes of human personality are described with matter of fact and heartfelt honesty. Distinctions of character upon which we define ourselves are revealed to hold little currency in the face of the human extremities: war, death, loss and love.

对于人性的描绘从来都不是非黑即白的，而是介于中间的灰色地带。人们徘徊在关于愤世嫉俗、失败、抱负和希望的不同范畴，从而有机会在这些基础上建立更好的生活，所以人与人之间的平衡是在不断变化着的。

Human nature as portrayed is never black and white but shades of grey. A constant shifting balance of people with each other - comparing and contrasting their cynicisms, failures, ambitions and hopes, profound experiences on which a better life can be built given the opportunity.

It is never easy, and there has never been a linear upward path for female leaders particularly in the Architecture industry. However, SPARK’s women have courageously carved their own paths and are a brilliant example to all of our designers regardless of gender.
