BDP has been confirmed as the architect and engineer converting Manchester’s exhibition centre into the latest of the government’s coronavirus surge hospitals. And Manchester Nightingale Hospital at the Manchester Central Convention Complex opened officially (Friday, 2pm, 17 April).

Drawing on its experience designing Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool, and through collaboration with clinicians, consultants, contractors, Manchester Central and the British Army, BDP helped to deliver the scheme on a two-week deadline ready for admitting patients on Easter Monday.

Officially known as NHS Nightingale Hospital North West it is equipped to receive up to 750 coronavirus patients from across the region who do not need intensive care but still require treatment. The hospital has been functioning since 13 April. This releases crucial critical care beds in existing hospitals.

The project has been an excellent example of collaboration across all construction disciplines, local government, the military and the NHS. IHP were asked to proceed on Saturday 28 March and within 12 hours our team was up and running in liaison with the NHS and the Army and the facility was handed over 13 days after construction began. The 14,500 sqm of flooring could cover Wembley twice over; there is 104km of data cable, which is the same distance as a return journey from Manchester to Liverpool; there is 45km of power cable and the 3,400m of partitioning is 17 times the height of the local Deansgate Square tower.

The main hall has been divided into 18 wards within the grade two listed building. A modular panel cladding system was used to form bed-heads and service corridors.

The existing electrical system was expanded and a large-scale gas system for providing patients with oxygen has also been installed.

Ged Couser, architect principal at BDP’s Manchester studio, said: “We worked closely with clinicians to ensure that every bed can be fitted with all the equipment required to treat Covid-19 patients.

Professor Michael McCourt, the chief executive of the Manchester Nightingale thanked all of the contractors and suppliers involved: “It has been incredibly humbling to see all the hard work that has gone into building a hospital out of nothing and in such a short period of time. No matter what your role has been, without you, this would not have been possible. Teams have worked day and night, in a challenging environment to achieve this and you should be very proud of your contribution.
