Ramboll Studio Deriseitl adheres to the biophilic design concept, and comprehensively considers the encounter and interaction between humans and wildlife. The strategy is to link up the pockets of nature around SBWR to form a biodiversity corridor, to better balance human impact on nature through sensitive zoning and careful visitor leading, to have a high quality interpretation programme and toreach for sustainability on environmental, social and economic fronts.

After the project was completed, it won the Outstanding Landscape Award of the International Association of Landscape Architects in Asia Pacific (IFLA),the Singapore Landscape Association (SILA) Gold Award and Singapore Future City Award.

Its global importance as a stop-over point for migratory birds was also recognized by the Wetlands International's inclusion of the reserve into the East Asian Australasian Shorebird Site Network. The reserve was listed as an ASEAN Heritage Park in 2003.The main objective for the master plan is to seamlessly integrate the encounters and interactions between the human and the wildlife through the environment-conscious design.

NParks has conceptualized the Master Plan to enhance the value of SBWR to the community. The Master Plan is designed for sustainability – the core of the nature reserve will be managed for its biodiversity values, while the fringes of the reserve will be managed for enhanced recreational use.

The Kranji Nature Trail is designed to be a habitat walk aimedat educating children about four basic habitats found at the Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, namely : Forest, Lake, Mangrove, Sea. It is hoped that theproposed redevelopment of Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve will bestow a renewedsense of wonder on visitors and perhaps a sense of nostalgia for those oldenough to remember that mangroves were a part of Singapore natural heritage. What is more important is that all individuals be imbued with a sense of care for the Wetland Reserve, and this is certainly the most powerful emotional attachment of all.

At the Junior Adventure Trail, kids can compete by crossing the mangrove river on a pulley boat and experience the life of a crab or mudskipperin the mangroves by ducking under prop roots and leaping amongst pencil roots.

For the first time in Singapore, visitors can step onto them udflats during low tide to get up close with creatures living in the mud. Awalk through the web mimics the instability of walking in a mudflat, while the more adventurous may choose to step off the floating platform into the mud.
