Project Location

Zhaoxin Huijin Centre

Oval Cuts

Visual Range from Tower A

Construction Update

Facade Design Analysis

The Podium

Zhaoxin Huijin Centre

Zhaoxin Huijin Centre is located on a golden corner, across the Shennan Avenue and the Jianshe Road, facing two of the most important landmarks in Shenzhen, the Di Wang Tower and the KK100. This special condition brought the necessity to create a special design, which is strong enough to balance the iconicity among the surrounding landmarks.

Zhaoxin Huijin Centre

The project is composed of 3 buildings, Tower A, Tower B and the Podium. Tower A, thanks to its height of 261m, can be considered as a landmark tower, connected by Tower B - a high-rise residential building with a more regular design, and the Podium, whose design is of more commercial oriented.

立面安装(A塔) Facade panels installation (Tower A)

Tower A is a mixed-use building that has a very strong image given by two main characteristics. The first one is the oval cuts on the North-West and South-East corners, which consists of a large scale oval-shaped facade interruption that makes the facade strongly recognisable from the Shennan Avenue, one of the most important roads in Shenzhen and also the main access point to the site. The reason behind the oval cuts is to alleviate the effects from the discontinuous massing and misalignment of the tower itself, by introducing an organic and smooth gesture (the oval) to it. The output is a gently curvy line that draws 2 ovals pointing each other to the golden corner, and the middle area of the tower where the sky lobby is located, delivers a very special uncommon image to the building.

The second key element of the Landmark Tower is the decorative pattern, cladding down from the bottom and up to the top. The pattern design comes from a nature-inspired concept, which is willing to be strongly linked to the city of Shenzhen. In fact, one of the main characteristics of Shenzhen is the gorgeous tropical nature, which is everywhere, not only in the parks but also along the roads and even in the buildings, creating an interesting interaction between landscape and architecture.

Facade Design Analysis

The facade design is inspired by the mangrove branches hit by the sunlight, and our intention is to recreate random interlacement of the mangrove branches, but with its own order, and so it is able to filter the sunlight, results in interesting shadow effects inside the building. The pattern, in fact, is not regular from bottom to top, but it starts as a straight low-density grid with larger modules to gradually become a high-density diamond-shaped pattern when getting closer to the tower's middle point, and they become straight again on the upper part of the tower. This dynamic articulation goes together with the tower shaping, making the natural transition between the typical floors on the bottom and top, as well as the middle part (of the tower) which has a larger footprint. The final output is the facade that has a consistent and continuous language, but at the same time, it creates different shadow and lighting effects in terms of various patterns on it.

Tower B adopts a system of straight lines, making it an elegant and well-designed residential tower. This unique façade system with the strong straight lines creates a greater sense of coherence and regularity. In terms of an overall presentation, the key element is the same cladding of the shining reflective materials that are also applied to Tower A and the Podium, and the characteristics by using different triangular metal panels with different inclinations is to create different reflective effects, like a shiny diamond.

As the connection of the two towers, and the element that unifies the entire complex, the podium adopts the same language with the two towers. The rhombic shape pattern is a response to the mangrove branch pattern on Tower A and the diamond-shaped cladding on Tower B. The repetitive use of the modules with the same language, the graduate change on module thicknesses, and the glazing, as well as the highly reflective anodized aluminium, all be in favour of enhancing the commercial vibe. The highlight is the oval element where connects the landscape, sunken plaza umbrella canopy, podium ceiling, and the roof pavilions. They have different functions, scales and typologies, as an entirety. Moreover, the oval language is also a response to the oval cut on Tower A.
